Canon EOS 20D underwater housings (06-01-2005)

The EOS 20D is Canon's latest semi-professional digital SLR with a resolution of 3504 x 2336 pixels (8.2 megapixel).

The EOS 20D is compatible with more than 60 Canon EF lenses, including Canon's EF-S lenses. Built with the EOS 20D photographer in mind, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM and EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM cover popular wide (approx. 16-35mm) and standard (approx. 27-136mm) ranges in the 35mm equivalent.

Because the function buttons have been slightly changed in both location and size compared to the EOS 10D, housing producers have to alter their 10D housings to accomodate the 20D. A number of manufacturers have already announced their new models:

The MediaSub KF 3 Digital underwater housing was already suitable for various Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon and Olympus digital SLRs, and is now also available for the EOS 20D.

The housing is made of carbon, has stainless steel, seawater resistant quick-clasps and provides access to 12 functions of the camera. Nikonos V compatible flash connection, handles and leak warning are included standard.

The Ikelite #6871.20 is a modification of the 10D predecessor, the #6871.10, with a number of improvements included.

This transparant polycarbonate housing can be safely used to depths of up to 60 meters. It is equipped with special conversion circuitry for eTTL2 compatibility when using the Ikelite DS-50 and DS-125 substrobes (see the Ikelite eTTL news item).

(Update 13-01-2004) The UK-D-20D by UK-GERMANY is made of salt water resistant aluminium, CNC primed, coloured hard coated and targeted at the professional underwater photographer.

The interior is fitted out in black textile; which can absorb reflection and moisture if necessary. Changes of chip cards possible without removal of the camera.

Apart from the cursor and stop-down buttons, all functions of the camera can be controlled. One flash connector and handle is included standard, a second connector and handle can be added optionally. The housing is equipped with the reliable UK Bajonett system which allows use of various objectives with the corresponding front ports.
