Canon EOS 5D underwater housings (17-11-2005)

The new Canon EOS 5D offers advanced photographers a lightweight, robust digital SLR that uses Canon's superlative EF lenses without a conversion factor.

Its full-frame 12.8 Megapixel CMOS sensor combines with Canon's DIGIC II Image Processor, a high-precision 9-point AF system with 6 assist points, and "Picture Style" color control to deliver images of superior quality with enough resolution for any application. With its wide-angle capabilities, 2.5 inch LCD and magnesium-alloy body, the 5D is the perfect addition to the Digital EOS line.

The Canon 5D will attract professional photographers that want more options and performance than the 20D, but at a lower cost than the 1D. For those thinking about taking a 5D under water, below is an overview of the upcoming underwater housings.

The MediaSub BUW 1 KF 3 Digital underwater housing was already suitable for various Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon and Olympus digital SLRs, and is now also available for the EOS 5D.

The housing is made of carbon, has stainless steel, seawater resistant quick-clasps and provides access to all functions of the EOS 5D. Nikonos V compatible flash connection, handles and leak warning are included standard. Pricing for the BUW 1 KF 3 housing starts at 1620 euro.

Ikelite have just posted information about their EOS 5D housing (#6871.5) on their web site, and expect to begin shipment of housings before the end of November. It is a modification of the 10D predecessor, the #6871.10, with a number of improvements included.

Conversion circuitry is included in the housing for eTTL2 compatibility when used with DS-50 and DS-125 SubStrobes (see the Ikelite eTTL news item), and the new DS-80 and DS-200 models to be introduced early next year. The price for the #6871.05 housing without port is 1400 USD.
