Because I was going on holiday to the Canary Islands, I wanted to buy a camera that could be used both above and underwater. I decided to buy the Sony DSC-P1 because it's 3.3 MegaPixels were excellent for photo prints. Also, the camera, housing and accessories were available for a nice price.

The camera provides a wide range of options, like macro (10 cm), 3x zoom (117 mm), MPeg movies (320x240 pixels) and adjustable shutter speed. The housing is compact, easy in use and provides access to most of the camera's options. A drawback is that the Program button (for night-shot etc.) and the LCD Display On/Off button can not be used.

I use 128Mb Memorysticks as storage medium, each good for 80 to 90 pictures on the highest resolution (2048 x 1535 pixels). Because the camera is capable of copying images between memorysticks, I tend to use one for storage and the other one during diving.

I ordered an extra macro lens. It is especially made to fit the housing, so I can change it underwater. This lens helps improve the macro range.

Because I wanted more colors and I could use more light on nightdives, I bought a Gilan tank-lamp. Fitted with a tankhandle, it is easy to hold in my hand while keeping my fingers free for operating the camera. A drawback is that this permanent lightsource scares the fish away when approaching them.

Main advantages of this set:

  • Easy to operate.
  • Small size camera and housing.
  • Copying between memorysticks.
  • Two dives without changing batteries.

Drawbacks:

  • LCD display cannot be turned off underwater.
  • Batteries are charged in the camera.
  • The divelamp scares the fish.
